Since April is oral cancer awareness month, polishDENTISTRY in Midtown Houston would like to give you a little more information on why it is so important to get annual screenings and on what we as dentists do to help screen our patients for oral cancer.
As with any type of cancer, EARLY DETECTION is key!! And the problem with oral cancer is that detection is usually found so late, the results are more detrimental. This is why we offer oral cancer screenings at our dental office in Midtown Houston.
Here are the stats:
- The number of oral cancers have increased over a 7-year period, where all other cancers have declined.
- And 40 % of new diagnosis are YOUNG, NON-SMOKERS. This is why CDC recommends annual oral cancer screenings from as early as 17 years old and older.
- The risk factors have changed. Tobacco and alcohol use are not the only contributing factors- HPV is the cause of the fastest growing oral cancer population under the age of 45 and is responsible for 15 times increase in oral cancer diagnosis.
We offer fluorescence technology to help aid in our screenings. Basically, it is a light that the dentist shines in your mouth to check all your tissues for any changes. This is a simple, non-invasive 2-minute exam, that allows us to see things that we cannot see with the naked eye. By noticing these changes early on, we can get suspicious areas checked out before they turn into a lump or bump or lesion.
Please do not miss your oral cancer screening at your next dental visit!
Below is an example of what our naked eye sees vs what is detected with the fluorescence light.
